Artist's Description

Maldivian Fruitbat.
What a magnificent bat but it belies its name. These bats feast mostly on nectar and pollen, not fruit as its name might suggest. Because of its diet, it has an enormous tongue that won’t even fit in its mouth - it is recoiled back down around its ribs!
The name Fruitbat may have been due to its appearance when resting in trees, looking like fruit hanging instead.
These animals are considered to be mega bats as their wingspan is around 1.5 metres. Having witnessed these marvellous creatures first hand, I can honestly say that they seemed bigger to me.
They play an important part in pollination around the atolls and in seed dispersal, sometimes flying amazing distances to feed. They are considered to be endangered due to culls by farmers who believe them to be pests.
Photographed in The Maldives.

I only volunteer a short time each week, but it’s important for me to feel that I’m giving something back and for a charitable cause close to my heart. Apart from photographing nature, I also enjoy most aspects of photography and there’s still a...
